Your BMW engine is the heart of your vehicle, and engine problems can cause severe, even irreparable, damage. If your XM, X5, or M3 shows any of the symptoms below, get repairs at your BMW dealer ASAP

6 Engine Problems You Should Always Fix at Your BMW Dealer

1. Frequent Overheating

There could be several reasons for overheating, such as low cooling system leaks or a malfunctioning thermostat, water pump, or cooling fan. If it gets too hot under the hood of your BMW often, it’s best to ask your technician to take a look as soon as possible. Driving with an overheating engine will cause extensive engine damage.

2. Starting Issues

If it’s hard to start your car, it could be due to several reasons, such as a faulty battery, a blocked fuel filter, fouled spark plugs, a malfunctioning catalytic converter, a failing fuel pump, a defective alternator, or a multitude of other issues. Schedule an engine diagnostic to pinpoint what is causing the starting issue and get it fixed before the problem escalates.

3. Engine Oil Leaks

If there are brown puddles on the ground under your car, it could be due to an engine oil leak. Several factors could lead to engine oil leaks, such as a blocked oil filter, a loose filler cap, a damaged oil pan, or a broken gasket. An engine oil leak can result in a loss of power and performance and will affect the longevity of your engine.

4. Vibrations and Noise

Worn or damaged parts under the hood will make awful noises. If you hear knocking, coughing, or spluttering noises from the front of your car and the engine is idling roughly and misfiring, something is wrong. It could be a clogged air filter, fouled spark plugs, faulty fuel injectors, or a damaged oxygen sensor. Either way, your BMW technician has the know-how to repair the problem expertly.

5. Exhaust Smoke

If you see plumes of white smoke and your car is overheating, it’s from burning coolant, usually due to a blown head gasket. Smoke with a grayish or blueish tinge is from an oil leak, bad piston rings, worn valve seals, or a leaky gasket.

When the air-to-fuel ratio is too rich, it will cause black smoke to billow out of your tailpipe caused by a faulty fuel injection system, a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator, or a clogged air filter. If you notice smoke, take immediate action and schedule repairs.

6. Check Engine Light

Whenever there is something wrong with your engine, it will trigger the check engine light on your dashboard. When the light goes on, call us for a diagnostic test to determine what is wrong so that the necessary repairs can be performed before it causes more damage.
