The next big Detroit IndyCar race will receive a masterpiece of a welcome. Check out a labor of love and art that honors this racing classic.

Detroit IndyCar Driving Dynasty

Since the 1980s, the Motor City has played host to one of the IndyCar circuit’s most iconic races. Each weekend following the Indy 500, single-seated and open-wheeled formula race cars take to the track for 100 laps and 170 miles of high-octane action.

The Penske Corporation and Downtown Partnership have teamed up for the event. This year’s festivities will take place on June 4, preceded by a weekend full of celebration highlighting downtown’s best and brightest.

Destination Downtown

This year, the Grand Prix (presented by Lear) returns to its downtown roots. Local roadways from Jefferson Avenue to Franklin Street and Rivard will host a brand-new and exciting street circuit with ten turns that span 1.7 miles. Fans can even look forward to a remnant of the famed old city Street Circuit.

Enthusiasts can watch for free at several viewing sites during race time from 3 to 6 PM, and major television outlets like NBC will carry the action live. For a taste of the track you can drive downtown, the BMW 3 Series sedan can’t be beat. Its lightweight and compact form makes it a cinch to handle in busy spots, and that powerful engine capable of delivering 380-plus horsepower makes a sweet statement.

Community Connectivity

This race will take place in the beating heart of the city, which creates opportunities for community involvement that did not previously exist. Over 200 businesses are within walking distance of the circuit, and individuals will even be able to hear the revving engines over the Canadian border. Event organizers saw a unique way to showcase the talents of the Motor City’s young emerging artists while also showcasing this storied event.

Wow-Worthy Works of Art

The high schools of the city’s Public Schools Community District were presented with a challenge: take a scale model Indy Car, some paint and other art tools, and a whole lot of inspiration to create an eye-catching masterpiece. Theme-wise, the road was wide open. The budding artists could take motivation from the Grand Prix itself, from their school spirit, or their neighborhood or city.

Nine beautiful models were chosen for an art installation that will be on display in each city district. They made their grand debut at Henry Ford High School. Now, art lovers and racing lovers alike can enjoy the displays spread throughout favorite community haunts, local businesses, or even art galleries. The works of these emerging talents will be joined by a model contributed by established artist Phil Simpson, who also calls the Motor City home.

Place Your Bids

May will be the month to get pumped up for the big event, but it will also offer you chance to take a piece of the Grand Prix home with you. The student-designed works of art will be placed up for auction online, and if you’re interested your contributions will benefit these communities’ future. Proceeds will go to the city’s Office of Arts, Culture, and Entrepreneurship.
