BMW has always been a driver’s choice for style, performance, and innovation. How does the BMW XDrive make for an even more exciting auto experience?

BMW XDrive: AWD Revolution

Since 1985, BMW has offered its loyal enthusiasts premium all-wheel drive performance. XDrive (first introduced in 2003) takes all-wheel drive systems to a whole new level with cutting-edge technology captained by a clutch-pack differential that’s electronically actuated. This differential is found between the gearbox and driveshaft and sets itself apart from center differentials found on many AWD systems.

Torque variance from front and rear axles is implemented in a seamless and automatic fashion that drivers will not even notice. Enhanced Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) that includes torque vectoring made its debut in 2008. It’s an enhanced XDrive option available on select models. A planetary gearset is a key component of the DPC systems.

Bold Security Benefits

XDrive is always on the alert for tricky low-grip surfaces or extreme directional changes that occur during driving. When it detects these potential problems, XDrive springs into action and in the process betters vehicle traction, stability, and agility, Engine power and energy are divided between the axles and wheels in ratios responsive to real-time factors like wheel speed and traction, brake force, steering wheel angle, and gas pedal pressure. Therefore, you will enjoy a safer driving experience.

Because of these advantages, XDrive systems are especially helpful in inclement weather conditions (such as snow or rain) or for off-roading. The systems can even monitor road conditions and detect an upcoming wheel spin.

Dynamo Dynamics

Those power shifts between the front and rear axles also make your BMW more agile and deliver you more dynamic handling. For example, the system handles sharp curves by reducing power supplied to inner curve wheels, which enables a swifter exit from the turn. Because it monitors your actions with the steering wheel, it can also perform corrective measures to over or under-steering, making your drive much smoother and more stable.

Better yet, you won’t sacrifice the efficiency you normally would with a traditional all-wheel drive system. Even though you will get maximum horsepower, you won’t experience energy loss to keep good traction. XDrive is specifically designed to conserve energy through more thoughtful power transference and a lighter weight.

XDrive Options

Most of BMW’s premier lineup comes with the next-level XDrive system available. Rear-wheel drive performance beasts like the X3-X7 variants and the ultra-stylish M440i XDrive coupe have a typical 40/60 torque deliverance split between the front and rear wheels, respectively, with less power provided to the front wheels with DPC XDrive for blink-of-an-eye 0-60 acceleration.

Front-wheel drive-based performers such as the X1 and X2, as well as all-electric powerhouses like the iX, also have slightly altered xDrive systems available.
