BMW Transmission shifter

Your BMW’s transmission converts engine power into energy so your BMW can drive. An engine produces chaotic, unfocused energy, and the transmission focuses this energy through a series of gears. These gears allow your car to move at the desired speed. In time, you may need a transmission repair at your BMW dealer. These are a few signs that your transmission could be in trouble.

Signs You Need a Transmission Repair at Your BMW Dealer

Transmission Fluid Leak

Transmission fluid flows through your transmission and helps to control its temperature. The constant movement of numerous parts generates great heat. Many transmission parts also depend on friction to work. The fluid provides a friction barrier around them to prevent damage. In addition, the fluid provides the hydraulic power necessary for your gears to shift.

If you have a transmission leak, you’ll rapidly lose the benefits of this fluid. Transmission components will grind against each other, which can result in damage. The transmission temperature will increase. If the temperature isn’t reduced the transmission will overheat. Your gears will become more difficult to shift, and damage to gear teeth can result. Our technicians will find and fix the source of the leak.

Burning Rubber Smell

Transmission fluid needs to be changed regularly. When the fluid is new, it’s bright red, but it slowly darkens in time. The fluid absorbs dirt, rust particles, metallic pieces, and other detritus that develop in the transmission. These particles make the fluid heavier and slower, which reduces the fluid’s efficiency. Additionally, the fluid gradually loses its heat-resistant qualities.

Older fluid can overheat in the transmission, and start to burn. Burning transmission fluid smells like burning rubber. Burnt transmission fluid loses all of its abilities, and can no longer provide hydraulic power for the gears. Your gears will become more difficult to change. We can fix these problems by flushing your transmission to remove the old fluid and then refilling it with new transmission fluid.

Jerking and Shaking

Your transmission should shift easily through the gears according to the instructions of your transmission computer. A jerking movement when the gears shift is a sign that something is going wrong. This movement will be slight at first but will become more pronounced as time passes. If the problem isn’t fixed, your transmission will start to shake as the gears change.

There are several possible causes for this strange behavior. The most common cause is a lack of transmission fluid. The fluid, as we’ve seen, provides the hydraulic power to shift the gears. Old transmission fluid or a fluid leak can both cause the transmission to jerk and shake. We’ll check your transmission and fix the cause of the problem.

BMW Transmission repairs can usually be quickly and easily fixed if they’re diagnosed early. Call us at BMW of Bloomfield Hills and schedule an appointment for service.
