Engine and Performance

The BMW X5 base models offer a more powerful performance with the 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower turbo inline 6-cylinder engine delivering up to 375 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. The top speed is 130 mph and acceleration from 0-60 mph is in 5.3 seconds. The engine also comes standard with eBoost 48V mild hybrid technology, as well as a twin-scroll turbocharger with variable valve control and high-precision direct injection.  

The Mercedes GLE base trim comes standard with a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo engine with mild hybrid drive, delivering up to 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Transmission and Handling

In the core models of the BMW X5, you’ll find an 8-speed sport automatic transmission with sport and manual shift modes and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. You’ll also find driving dynamics control with Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport modes as well as more technologies than the GLE to improve handling and braking, such as:

  • Dynamic stability control (DSC)
  • Dynamic traction control (DTC)
  • Dynamic brake control
  • Dynamic damper control
  • Hill descent control (HDC)
  • Electric power steering

The Mercedes GLE features a 9G-tronic automatic transmission with shift paddles to select different modes in the dynamic select system. There are three preset modes: ECO, Comfort, and Sport as well as an Individual mode to configure à la carte.

Exterior Design and Color

The X5 models are hard to beat with the classic BMW design with satin aluminum accents, including roof rails in satin aluminum. Standard equipment also includes 20-inch V-spoke wheels with all-season run-flat tires, chrome exhaust tips, and power-folding, heated side mirrors. Color options on the X5 include:

  • Alpine white
  • Black sapphire metallic
  • Manhattan green metallic
  • Blue ridge mountain metallic 

The Mercedes GLE has a well-toned design, and the base trim comes standard with aluminum roof rails, brushed aluminum trims, and 19-inch, 10-spoke wheels.

Interior Design and Comforts

The BMW X5 has a spacious interior with up to 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space and an optional Sky Lounge LED panoramic roof that makes the interior feel even bigger. You’ll also find 3-stage heated, power front sport seats with a center console featuring a USB-C port and a 3-spoke power telescopic leather-wrapped multi-function sport steering wheel. The X5 also has more standard technological comforts, including a 14.9-inch central information display and:
